WHO WE ARE
Growing up in part determines who you are and who you’ll be as an adult. Behaviours developed during childhood and early adolescence are predictors of adult behaviours.
There are 32 Life Education Regional Trusts across New Zealand operating mobile classrooms and Regional Trusts are the providers of our Healthy Harold programme in primary and intermediate schools.
In our complex and changing society, the mental health and wellbeing of our children shapes their success in life. Children and young people face an increasing number of issues that can seriously impact their wellbeing. Simply put – growing up isn’t easy.
All young people want the same things - to be included, opportunities to learn, to take risks and experience success, to have friends who value and accept them, and to feel competent and confident.
Growing up is like a roller coaster ride. Sometimes life is fantastic, there’s so much to look forward to and the future looks bright. The next moment it can all come crashing down and it seems like nothing’s going right. These ups and downs can be very challenging.
WE KNOW...
New Zealand has one of the worst youth suicide rates in the OECD – and on average 20 young people are admitted to hospital each week as a result of self-harm.
New Zealand has one of the highest child obesity rates and we know this leads to poor mental health, higher incidences of being a victim of bullying and lower educational achievement.
How critical the neurological processes and natural brain maturation is for our young people and the impact alcohol and other substances has on an adolescent brain during this critical period.
Alcohol education needs to take place well before the legal drinking age. Thirty percent of children aged 13 or less have tried alcohol and 18% of that group say they ‘currently drink’, with nearly 7% saying they have been ‘binge drinking’ in the last four weeks.
Find out more about the Healthy Harold Programme
For the last 30 years Life Education, its mobile classrooms and our mascot Harold have been teaching health and wellbeing in New Zealand’s primary and intermediate schools. Harold as our mascot is instantly recognisable with children, so he his carried in our regional Trust’s logo and embedded in our Healthy Harold programme.
